In honor of Juneteenth and Black Music Month, Community Build, Inc. will host the African American Heritage Month Legacy Project, a retrospective exhibit showcasing over 100 pictures, memorabilia and documents on emancipation, civil rights, writers, inventors, Motown and the presidency of Barack Obama.

Exhibit showcases history for Juneteenth, Black Music Month

The exhibit is where Black culture meets African art in Leimert Park, curator Albert Lord said while pointing to the extensive collection of historical artifacts.

"This is the only public exhibition of the Emancipation Proclamation in Southern California," Lord said.

Lord works as the vice president of Government Relations and Arts Programs at Community Build, a South LA hub of resources where he produced the exhibit.

South L.A. RESIDENTS TO GET FREE OR DISCOUNTED RIDES TO VACCINES

Sausedo said the aim of the program is to eliminate barriers to vaccination in areas hardest hit by the coronavirus.

“We wanted to do this for a couple of reasons,” said Sausedo, who is fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine. “We get a lot of calls from people asking where are the vaccination sites. They even asked if we can pick them up.

 South Los Angeles-based nonprofit Community Build, Inc., and Lyft have partnered to provide residents of South Los Angeles access to free or discounted
rides to and from COVID-19 vaccine sites. Community Build, Inc. President Robert Sausedo and Lyft’s Community Organizer for Southern California Van Pierszalowski announced the launch of Community Build’s new Vaccine Rydes program at a press conference on April 1. The program is
aimed at eliminating barriers to vaccination in areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Divine Inspiration Leads to a Game-Changing Emergency Response System for the Community

As the head of a legacy nonprofit in South Los Angeles, Sausedo knew that it wouldn’t be long before shortages of daily essentials would impact all areas, but underserved communities of color, where families were already living on the economic margins, would be especially hard hit.  Sausedo, who is also an associate pastor, said a silent prayer and asked for guidance.

n celebration of Valentine’s Day, Community Build, Inc. Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GYRD) Intervention and Prevention Southwest 1 Teams held a special “Spread the Love, Not COVID” Grab ‘N Go event on February 11.  Over 200 gift bags filled with masks, first aid kits, hand sanitizers,  bottles of water, candy, and COVID-19 fact sheet, CBI information, various hygiene items as well as lunch, were distributed to individuals and families.
